The Three Lions captain has warned his teammates that they must not lose their heads in Podgorica, where Wayne Rooney has previously been sent off for the national team.
The Three Lions sit two points behind their upcoming opponent in Group H and will be targeting a win to put themselves in control of the World Cup 2014 qualification fight.
Wayne Rooney was sent off when these two sides last met in Podgorica in a volatile 2-2 draw at the conclusion of Euro 2012 qualification and Gerrard is expecting a similar atmosphere.
"It is going to be a pressure situation and we don't need to give the referee any excuse to send any of us off or give any unnecessary yellow cards," the Liverpool midfielder told the FA's official website. "It is important everyone takes responsibility and stays on the pitch. They will be trying to claim every decision, every foul and will try to intimidate the ref to make rash decisions.
"I'm sure we will have a good ref in charge who will make sensible decisions but it's important we keep our cool and keep everyone on the pitch. I'm sure everyone knows it before the game but I'm sure the manager will remind everyone and I'm sure that will be one of the points on the board."
