FIFA hands Scotland striker Naismith two-game ban

After the forward was found guilty of elbowing Serbia's Srdjan Mijailovic during last month's World Cup qualifier, the striker has been banned for October's matches.

Scotland striker Steven Naismith has been banned for two games by FIFA, meaning he will miss both upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Naismith was found guilty of elbowing Serbia midfielder Srdan Mijailovic during the goalless draw during the qualifier at Hampden Park last month. The ban means Naismith will miss the games against Wales and Belgium, but manager Craig Levein is confident the Everton attacker's absence will not affect his players negatively.

"Obviously this is disappointing news, but Steven has been very honest and professional throughout the disciplinary process,” Levein told Sky Sports. "We named a 25-man squad to compensate for any potential suspension, which has now been confirmed. I am confident we have enough strength in that department to offset the loss of a player who has been in excellent form so far this season."
