Robin van Persie questionable for Netherlands' clash with England after suffering a groin injury

The Arsenal forward missed the last 10 minutes of training with his national side on Tuesday at Wembley but Bert van Marwijk hopes the 28-year-old will be fit for Wednesday's match

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie is a doubt for the Netherlands' friendly against England on Wednesday after pulling up with a groin problem in training.

The 28-year-old missed the last 10 minutes of training on Tuesday evening after aggravating a groin strain he sustained during Arsenal’s 5-2 victory against Tottenham on Sunday.

Despite the scare, Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk played down the extent of Van Persie's injury and is hopeful the striker will be fit to face England at Wembley.

“We will have to wait and see but I don't think it's too serious. I am optimistic he will play," he said.

Van Persie has netted 33 goals in 39 appearances for Arsenal and the Netherlands this season and Van Marwijk praised the striker's adaptation after moving into a more central role.

“Robin is in great form. It's a little bit different this season with Robin," he said. He is scoring a lot of goals now. He is now a center forward.

“Normally he is a player who plays in combination, with others. He did that with Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri but now he plays very deep as a striker."

Van Marwijk also stated that his team's performance is the most important thing in Wednesday's friendly, leading up to Euro 2012.

“The performance is more important than the result for us tomorrow,” he noted.

“We want to play in the Dutch way. We want to win but it's more important that we are ready when the Euros come around.”
