Sunderland's Bendtner receives 56-day driving ban for speeding

The Denmark international, on loan from Arsenal, had been traveling to Newcastle airport in December and was already late for a flight, clocking in at 104mph.

Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner, who is currently on loan at Sunderland, has been given a 56-day driving ban after speeding in December as he attempted to catch a flight in Newcastle.

The 24-year-old was traveling down the A696, a 70mph zone, but the forward, driving his Porsche 911 Turbo, was clocked doing 104mph on Dec. 10. Bendtner pleaded guilty to the charge.

Barry Warburton, defending Bendtner, claimed the morning of his client’s transgression was a quiet Saturday when the weather was fine and clear, while he also insisted the Dane has been of no problem to anyone else.

“I understand he was going to Newcastle Airport, he was slightly late for a flight and unfortunately he speeded," Warburton said. “It was a Saturday morning, there was very little traffic on the road and weather conditions were fine.

“Not withstanding the fact he is in Denmark, he has been absolutely no trouble to anybody. In my respectful submission, your public duty can be discharged by treating him with leniency.”

As well as the ban from driving, Bendtner has been ordered to pay a fine of 660 pounds, and he will also have to hand over 30 pounds in costs, plus a 15 pound victim surcharge.
