Barcelona attacker Afellay resumes training after lengthy injury layoff

The Dutchman has been working on his recovery in the past five months and is slowly nearing his comeback as the Blaugrana are hopeful he can return to action this season
Barcelona has received some promising news on the injury front as Netherlands international Ibrahim Afellay has returned to the pitch after spending the past few months on the sidelines due to a knee injury.

The versatile attacker, who can also play in midfield, damaged a cruciate ligament in his left knee during training in September 2011, and underwent an operation shortly after the incident.

Afellay has since been working on his recovery, and the former PSV star has now set foot on the training pitch again for the first time.

Barcelona revealed on its official website that the 25-year-old received a standing ovation from his teammates, before performing a number of individual exercises.

It's not yet known when Afellay will resume regular squad training, but Barcelona is hopeful that he will be able to make his comeback before the end of the season and keep alive his hopes of Euro 2012 participation with the Netherlands.
