The table-toppers opened the scoring before the break courtesy of a Rasmus Elm free kick, but the reigning champions fought back after the break
Sweden international Rasmus Elm gifted the home side the lead before the break, but a Simon Poulsen own goal after the interval helped the champions to a hard-fought draw.
The hosts started the match superbly and could have opened the scoring after only three minutes via Roy Beerens, but the winger headed home from close range.
Ajax then seemed to break the deadlock via Miralem Sulejmani, but the Serbian attacker's goal was disallowed for offside.
AZ went 1-0 up in the 37th minute after Elm beat Ajax goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer with a well taken free kick from 20 yards.
The Amsterdam giants then took over the initiative after the break, and were eventually rewarded with the equaliser after 75 minutes of play when Poulsen beat his own shot stopper after good work from Nicolas Lodeiro.
AZ remains first in the league table with 39 points from 18 games, but will drop to second if PSV wins its match versus Utrecht.
Ajax sits fourth in the Eredivisie table following this weekend's results with 34 points fmo 18 matches.
