Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes has admitted that the Bavarians were somewhat fortunate to beat Bochum 2-1 in Tuesday's DFB Pokal clash.
The Bundesliga table-toppers needed a late Arjen Robben strike to book their ticket for the quarterfinals of the cup competition, and the 66-year-old had nothing but praise for their opponents.
"We won it luckily at the end against a Bochum team who fought well and played well," Heynckes told the press.
"All credit to [head coach] Andreas Bergmann’s players, who I think were outstandingly well-prepared and built superbly well from the back."
Heynckes added, "They made life very difficult for us, especially in the first half, and came at us time and again. I wasn’t happy with my team in the first half, even though we prepared well for the game. "
"We looked much more up for it in the second half and we had Bochum on the ropes on a couple of occasions. It was a typical cup tie, where the underdogs rise above themselves."
Bayern's first match after the winter break is the Bundesliga game away to Borussia Monchengladbach on January 20.
