Ranocchia had been included in the match squad for Tuesday evening's Serie A clash away to Genoa, but he sustained a muscle injury in Monday's training session and will consequently miss the match at the Luigi Ferraris.
It's not yet known exactly how long the 23-year-old defender will be unavailable for due to the knock, but the Nerazzurri fear that Ranocchia will be out of action until the winter break.
Ranocchia will undergo a number of tests on Tuesday to determine the extent of his ailment.
