Nacho Novo bagged a brace and David Barral scored the other as Sporting Gijon claimed a comprehensive 3-1 victory at Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

Barral took advantage of hesitation between goalkeeper David Cobeno and defender Mikel Labaka to nip in and open the scoring after nine minutes.

Cobeno made two great saves after that, but could do nothing to prevent Novo from making it 2-0 after the former Rangers forward latched onto a pass from Miguel de las Cuevas.

Novo then added another after 66 minutes following another defensive error from Rayo, who hit a late consolation through Michu.

Sporting move out of the relegation zone and now has 15 points, one less than 13th-placed Rayo.

Getafe moved up to 13th place in the standings after a hard-fought win over Granada at Estadio Coliseum Alfonso Perez

Fabri Gonzalez's side was overrun by the home side which had the better of the opening few chances. Pablo Sarabia instigated the creativity, with Diego Castro and Michel spurning the best of the first half opportunities.

The second half saw few clear openings. Odion Igalho's effort flew wide for El Grana, as Adrian Colunga's effort from outside the area flashed over.

In what looked increasingly like becoming a draw, captain Javier Casquero's strike from inside the area 12 minutes from time stole three points for the Azulones.

Villarreal's struggles continued as the club was held to a 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad at El Madrigal on Sunday evening.

A competitive first half saw the Yellow Submarine threaten offensively, with Marco Ruben a particular highlight with his aerial strength. At the other end, Philippe Montanier's men could only fashion chances through the efforts of Antoine Greizmann.

Despite the visiting side backtracking it would broke the deadlock. Mikel Aranburu was on hand to convert Carlos Vela's cross from close range after 52 minutes. Gorka Elustondo was then shown red after a second bookable offense as La Real struggled to see the game out.

And the numerical disadvantage told, as Ruben directed the ball home from Joselu's cross to salvage a point. The home, which exited the Champions League this week, hovers above the relegation places in 17th,

1-1 Osasuna

Osasuna picked up a deserved point as it held Malaga to a 1-1 draw at La Rosaleda.

Los Boquerones had by far the better chances in a period of dominance from the off. Jeremy Toulalan spurned a volley, with Isco also causing havoc.

Manuel Pelligrini's side should've been ahead had it not been for the lack of killer finishing. Ignacio Monreal combined well with Solomon Rondon who slammed wide, before the former hit the post.

The Basque visitors punished the home team by scoring against the run of play. Nino's corner was met by the head of Ibrahima Balde who made it 1-0.

After further profligate finishing from Malaga, the team finally equalized. A beautiful weighted pass from Isco found Sergio Sanchez, and the left back picked out Juanmi, who fired past Andres Fernandez.

Rondon had a header saved by Andres late on, with the Venezuelan striker failing to trouble, despite numerous opportunities.

Real Zaragoza's miserable run continued as the club was edged out 1-0 by Mallorca at La Romareda.

In a first half of few chances, it wasn't until the 40th minute an attack of real quality occurred, and when it did arrive, Mallorca would take the lead. Pablo Caceres' whipped cross found Victor at the far post, where he headed home.

The Blanquillos almost found themselves two down just before halftime as Gonzalo Castro's effort from distance narrowly crept wide as Javier Aguirre's men went in behind at the break.

Despite numerous changes, the home side failed to get back into the match with opportunities at a premium as Zaragoza slumped to a seventh defeat in eight games. Mallorca moves up to 10th with the victory.

Athletic Bilbao once again let two points slip away as the club was held to a surprise 1-1 draw with Racing at San Mames.

Beginning the fixture without key forward Fernando Llorente, the Basque side struggled to create chances, while the visiting side appeared to content to play for a share of the points.

The game plan was ruined in the 79th minute, however, when Jon Aurtenetxe outjumped Alvaro at the back post to head home Toquero's delivery for the all important breakthrough.

Racing had barely been in the Bilbao penalty area in the match, but in the third minute of injury time, defender Alvaro was left completely unmarked to head past Gorka Iraizoz and into the net, for an unlikely draw.

Espanyol earned three big points with a 4-2 win over Atletico Madrid, leaving Gregorio Manzano's job very much in doubt. A brace from Verdu and goals for both Romaric and Sergio Garcia were more than enough to see out the victory over a lackluster Atletico side.
