Olympique Lyonnais' 21-match unbeaten run came to an end as it suffered a shock 2-1 home defeat to Stade Rennes on Friday night. An early opener by Ederson was cancelled out by Jonathan Pitroipa. Remi Garde's men pushed for another goal, but were ultimately undone by Jires Kembo-Ekoko's winner in the 53rd minute to consign the hosts to a first defeat at the Stade Gerland in Ligue 1 since September 2010. |
| Toulouse | 0-0 |
Lille |
Lille prepared for a do-or-die Champions League clash against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday by enduring a stale 0-0 draw against Toulouse on Friday evening. Despite numerous attempts on goal, Moussa Sow's penalty miss before the break was to set the scene for a makeshift Lille side ahead of their trip to the Russian capital. |
| Evian |
2-1 |
Lorient |
| Evian won for the third time this season as it edged out FC Lorient 2-1 at Parc des Sports on Saturday evening. The hosts took the lead in the second minute after a penalty decision went their way. Yannick Sagbo dispatched his spot kick past Fabien Audard as Evian went 1-0 up. Despite numerous attempts to extend the lead, it was the visitors who would equalize. Lamine Kone levelled in the 47th minute, heading in Arnold Mvuemba's corner following poor defending. It was to be short-lived for Christian Gourcuff's men as les Merlus went down minutes later. Sagbo again turned provider, setting up on-loan Benfica defender Daniel Wass to fire past Audard in the 56th minute. Kevin Monnet-Paquet had chances late on, but this proved to be fruitless as the hosts held out for a third Ligue 1 victory. |
| Ajaccio |
2-2 |
Caen |
| AC Ajaccio arrested a run of four straight defeats as an injury time equalizer helped them salvage a 2-2 draw against Caen at Stade Francis Coty. In a largely stale first half, it was the visitors who had the better of the early openings. Molla Wegue spurned an opportunity following Romain Hamouma's free-kick. At the other hand, Frederic Sammaritano's fierce effort forced Alexis Thebaux into a fine save. A different second half saw four goals. Firstly, Ilan put the hosts in front from the spot as Thebaux was beaten. The Normandy club equalized after questionable defending by Yohann Poulard allowed Wegue to pounce and fire his side to level terms. Lenny Nargis looked to have won the game for Caen midway through the second half but the Corsicans salvaged a point in injury time through Benjamin Andre in a highly entertaining end to the game. |
| Nice |
0-2 |
Saint Etienne |
| New coach Rene Marsiglia watched in horror as eight-man Nice spectacularly imploded at home to Saint Etienne in a highly controversial match which saw three sendings off. Fabian Monzon and Eric Moulongoui combined well to test Stephane Ruffier in what was the first clear opportunity. The hosts were subsequently dealt a blow as goalkeeper David Ospina was sent off by referee Ruddy Buquet for an infringement in the area as Florent Sinama Pongolle stepped up to convert the spot kick on 23 minutes. Six minutes later, the hosts were down to nine men after Moulongoui was sent for an early bath for a rash tackle on Fabien Lemoine. Kurt Zouma doubled the visitors' lead after 39 minutes from a well-worked corner, assisted by the adventurous Romanian Banel Nicolita. A tempestuous encounter looked to have no end, with Pierre Aubameyang spurning a great chance to put the game out of the sight. Nice's best opportunity fell to Nemanja Pecjinovic, who couldn't force the ball over the line after a scramble in which Ruffier seemed beaten. Shockingly, Nice were then reduced to eight after Renato Civelli was shown a straight red for a lunge on Sinama Pongolle as les Verts secured a first two-goal victory at Stade du Ray for 22 years. |
| Dijon |
2-0 |
Bordeaux |
| Dijon moved out of the relegation zone and above Bordeaux after beating the visitors 2-0 at Stade Gaston Gerard. An indifferent encounter filled with profligate finishing finally sparked to life after 70 minutes when Eric Bautheac's long ball found star man Brice Jovial. The striker shook off the challenge of Michael Ciani to finish past Cedric Carrasso. Four minutes later, the hosts doubled their advantage with superb attacking play. Bautheac and Jovial both linked up to set up Benjamin Corgnet, who settled the match with a fine finish. Damien Marcq was shown red later for the hosts, who secured a fourth Ligue 1 victory. |
| Montpellier |
1-0 |
Marseille |
|
High-flying Montpellier moved joint-top of Ligue 1 as the club consigned Marseille to a first defeat in seven league games thanks to Souleymane Diawara's own goal. The home side dominated early proceedings on the south coast, as Souleymane Camara made his intentions known with a testing 20-yard effort which kept Steve Mandanda alert. Moments later, a good linkup with John Utaka saw Camara fire a volley goalwards, only for his effort to be deflected by the unaware Jeremy Morel. It wasn't until 20 minutes into the contest that Marseille found its feet. A well worked move from Jordan Ayew found Loic Remy, but the French international failed to lift the ball past an on-rushing Geoffrey Jourden. The deadlock was broken soon after the hour mark when the improving Camara again proved to be a nuisance in the OM half as his ball forced Diawara to head into his own net and gift la Paillade the goal. Didier Deschamps' men searched desperately for the equalizer, as Gignac set up Ayew late on. Despite Jourden's slip up, he failed to capitalize on the error as the club avenged defeat in last season's Coupe de la Ligue final. Marseille hosts Greek side Olympiakos in the Champions League in midweek, in a game where qualification to the last 16 could be assured. |
| Valenciennes | 2-1 | AJ Auxerre |
| Valenciennes depleted Auxerre on Sunday afternoon, despite being deprived of several key offensive weapons. It was AJA which made much the better start to the encounter, creating two good openings in the first two minutes before moving into the lead just 10 minutes before the break. A corner was not dealt with, and Alain Traore battered home as the ball came back out. The match changed completely in the second half, and the score was brought level thanks to a header from Nicolas Isimat. Only Olivier Sorin was keeping the home side at bay, but even he couldn't do anything when Isimat set up the impressive Mamadou Samassa to score the winning goal less than 15 minutes from time. |
| Stade Brestois | 2-0 |
Sochaux |
|
Struggling Brest picked up three important points at the Stade Francis-Le Ble as the team defeated Sochaux 2-0. Neither side was especially impressive in the final third of the pitch, so perhaps it was inevitable that it was an error that brought the opening goal midway through the second half.Mathieu Peybernes committed a foul on Eden Ben Basat in the box, leading to captain Bruno Grougi converting from the spot and a red card shown to the young defender. A second goal for Brest followed, though it gave the score a somewhat flattering edge as Romain Poyet converted a pass from Nolan Roux. |
| PSG | 0-1 |
Nancy |
| Paris Saint-Germain was unable to respond to Montpellier's Saturday win over Marseille as the club was shocked 1-0 by a Nancy side which started the game in the relegation zone. Les Parisiens were unimpressive in the first half, and were well frustrated by the Nancy defense. Jean Calve would provide a spectacular opening strike as he swept home his first ever Ligue 1 goal from the corner of the box, picking out the top corner of Salvatore Sirigu's goal. For a period, the visiting side looked liable to add to the advantage, with the Italian goalkeeper forced to make a terrific reaction save to turn an effort from Andre Luiz on to the crossbar. In the closing 20 minutes, PSG laid siege to the visiting net. Kevin Gameiro should have done better than to hit the bar from close range, while Cameroon international goalkeeper Guy Ndy Assembe saved the victory for his side by making a stunning double-save from Nene and Mathieu Bodmer. Though PSG remains top of Ligue 1, the pressure has mounted on coach Antoine Kombouare, who received a great deal of support from the home fans during this clash. |
