Luiz breaks nose in Brazil win over Mexico

The Chelsea star collapsed to the ground after a first-half collision and had blood pouring from his nose, but he finished the match and helped his team to victory.
David Luiz has confirmed he broke his nose during Brazil's FIFA Confederations Cup victory over Mexico.

Luiz collapsed to the ground after a first-half collision with teammate Thiago Silva while attempting to clear a ball into the penalty area, and he rose with blood pouring from his nose. The Chelsea star finished the match - which Brazil won 2-0 courtesy of goals from Neymar and former Manchester City striker Jo - but afterwards confirmed the extent of his injury.

"Yes, my nose is broken, but that's part of the game," Luiz told reporters. "Now I'll have to wait until the end of the competition and undergo a surgery to fix it."

Brazil was spurred to victory by a raucous crowd in Fortaleza, and afterwards Luiz admitted the noise generated during the national anthems created a special moment.

"It was thrilling, it gave me the chills. It's one of the best sensations I've had in my life, to see the whole stadium singing with passion," Luiz said. "We'll always make sure to give our best to these people, but it was an even bigger incentive to get on the pitch."
