thumbnail Hello,

Following a gutsy performance against the European champions, there was an undoubted taste of bitterness in the mouth of the South African coach as his side narrowly missed out on the Confederations third place.

After watching his side go to within two minutes of a historic victory over European Champions Spain, South Africa coach Joel Santana was understandably disappointed following his side’s narrow extra-time defeat in the Confederations Cup third place play-off.

Speaking in the mixed zone after the game, the Bafana coach remained gracious in defeat and praised his men for their overall performance.

“Bafana played very well. They gave away two quick goals but altogether they played well," said Santana.

"The defense did their job very well and the goals were all very good. This is football, though, well done to Spain.”

With the World Cup's opening curtain now firmly on the horizon, Santana was upbeat on his side’s competitiveness, following a positive Confederations Cup.

“We have another year to prepare for the big show and we are happy with how things are going,” concluded the coach.
