thumbnail Hello,

South Africa battled for a lion's share of the game, but came unstuck from a dead-ball situation, executed by substitute Daniel Alves.

BRAZIL

Julio Cesar: 7.0 - Kept his concentration well to get his mitts to dangerous balls, and generally saved well when called upon.

Maicon: 7.0 - Never needed an excuse to flirt with the final third. Corner-delivery was initially too heavy.

Lucio: 8.0 - A strong presence in Brazil's back-line who sniffed-out danger well. Physically impressive. Good touches. Let his marker go, though, for South Africa's first real chance.

Luisao: 5.5 - Gave away a free-kick in a dangerous area after clipping Parker with a left-boot. Did not look comfortable at the back.

Andre Santos: 6.0 - Lost possession in a dangerous area, and was guilty of sloppy passing at times too. Unleashed a long left-shot shot in the first half. Was substituted for Daniel Alves.

Felipe Melo: 7.5 -
Found space in the middle of the park. Played a fine trivela pass into Kaka's path. Changed play by sending in a perfectly-judged cross-field pass into Maicon's path but the roaming right-back failed to take a touch that was befitting of it.

Gilberto Silva: 6.5 - Crisp, short, passing. A typical display from the invisible wall.

Ramires: 7.0 - Good early effort. Tried to get on the score-sheet a handful of times.

Kaka: 7.5 - Great control, fine bursts from midfield. Had a great chance to break the deadlock but his shot sailed wide from 18-yards. Confidently countered but was unable to beat Khune. Showed good strength on a run down the line early in the second-half, but his cut-back failed to find a team-mate.

Robinho: 7.0 - One series of step-overs was followed by a stumble, but a back-heel found a team-mate while another trick drew space. Attempted an over-head kick but failed to find the target.

Fabiano: 6.0 - Play developed around him, but he was rarely involved. Had a tame shot easily collected by Khune just after the 60-minute mark.

Subs

Alves: 7.0 - Won the game for Brazil with a superb free-kick.

Kleberson: n/a.

SOUTH AFRICA

Khune: 6.5 - Got his gloves to an early shot from Ramires. Denied Andre Santos, and got down well to keep his hands on a Kaka shot. Conceded the game's only goal from a set-piece.

Masilela: 6.5 - Late and high challenge was left un-cautioned. Got forward well and showed good chase.

Booth: 7.5 - Communicated well with his cent center-back partner and even when trouble in the box flared, coped well. Managed to cut-out incisive through-balls. Never hesitant to get stuck in, and was oft composed, calm, and collected.

Mokoena: 7.5 - Strong clearances, and fine tackling. Got a good head onto a first-half set-piece but his header was off-target. Gave away the foul that led to the goal.

Gaxa: 7.0 - Capitalized well on Santos' mistake in the early stages, but his shot was slightly wayward.

Modise: 6.0 - Mixed-passing in midfield. Had options to pass but didn't need an invitation to press, and shoot.

Mhlongo: 7.0 - Unfussy, often unseen, but kept to his task of stifling Brazil's forward plays and seemed to keep a lid on most things.

Pienaar: 8.5 - Carried the ball well, but sometimes kept it too long. Showed good determination by trying to win interceptions and press for possession. Had good balance. A right-foot strike from outside the box tested Cesar but the Brazilian glovesman got his fingertips to Pienaar's effort. Threw himself into an opposing free-kick to deny the chance.

Dikgacoi: 7.0 - When in possession he kept a close space to the rest of his midfield to try to initiate short swift passes. Like Mhlongo, sat deep in midfield and stuck to a chore that hardly ever draws praise.

Tshabalala: 6.5 - Powerfully drove a dead-ball at Julio Cesar's fists.

Parker: 5.5 -  Initial touches on the ball were heavy, and seemed hurried in possession. Is still learning the ropes of leading the line in an international tournament game, but was also isolated.
