Reina 7 - Had little to do but can be pleased with his distribution. Quick off his line from through balls, too.
Arbeloa 6 - Solid enough but it was not an imaginative showing from the Liverpool man.
Pique 6 - Caught flatfooted by Pienaar and Parker before the interval and did not have the calmest of games. He can do much better.
Albiol 7.5 - A superb early intervention set the tone for the evening, even allowing for a needless yellow card.
Puyol 7.5 - The quote-unquote fullback was his usual endeavoring self: while he was caught out once, his passing play more than made up for it.
Busquets 7 - Economical in his movement but didn't waste the ball when he saw it. Still, could have battled a bit more.
Cesc 7.5 - Was unable to strike up a rapport with Villa and Torres in the early stages, despite his best efforts. But his running was fine to win the penalty.
Xavi 7.5 - Took a long time to unlock the defense but nonetheless always had a touch of danger about him.
Riera 7.5 - Completely lacked incisiveness until his amazing through ball to Villa, which sadly didn't connect. Then he set up the goal. He doesn't get the ball through often, but when he does it usually counts.
Villa 7 - Struggled to find the finish at all, not least from the spot but even before that. But then a rolled finish into the far corner shows why he's a great forward. (But was there handball in the buildup?)
Torres 6 - Could not make an impact despite an energetic start, and will not be pleased with his night's work. Then again, he was perhaps under orders to take it easy.
Pablo Hernandez 5.5 - Couldn't quite overcome the solid Booth in defense to make his voice heard.
Fernando Llorente 7 - Came on and netted a goal to seal the game, which is what he was there for.
SOUTH AFRICA (3-2-4-1)
Khune 9 - A brilliant save from Fernando Torres was his first real touch of the ball. A wonderful penalty save from Villa was next - and, even though the attacker beat him soon afterward, it wasn't his fault.
Mhlongo 6 - Not one of the leading lights of the back line, and was well lost by Villa for that opening goal.
Mokoena 6 - A rock on the edge of the area in the early stages, but it was a reckless tackle on Cesc that saw him concede a penalty, blotting his copybook severely.
Booth 7 - A fine deep defender, and he plays the simple pass well. Solid above all else.
Gaxa 8 - Defended extremely well and otherwise put in a decent wingback showing with some dangerous crosses.
Masilela 8 - An extremely encouraging performance up and down the flank: he kicked off several counters, too. Dynamic is the word for him.
Dikgacoi 7 - Indefatigable and never shy of sticking the tackle in, albeit sometimes a bit clumsily.
Sibaya 7 - A needless early booking unsettled him and his side, but he was a perpetual motion device who constantly harried the Spaniards.
Modise 5 - Got forward plenty but his dead ball ability was woeful, as was his finishing. What a shame for him!
Pienaar 7 - Extremely comfortable on the ball but couldn't do too much with it as his passes failed to come off in the early part of the game. He improved as it went on.
Parker 6.5 - Couldn't stay composed when faced with a glorious chance just before the break. Still, he had good vision.
