New York's Rafael Marquez scored his first goal with his new club in his new league, keeping true to his word of improving, Goal.com's Andrea Martinez says.Rafael Marquez is a man of his word. Marquez said he let his team down in New York's 1-0 loss to the Los Angeles Galaxy on Aug. 14. He said afterward that once he adjusted to the league he would be able to contribute.
Consider Marquez adjusted. Marquez scored his first MLS goal and made it a tremendous one as he scored on a swerving, long-range shot. Later, he sent a free kick on goal that the Toronto FC defense couldn't control and went in for an own goal. New York went on to win 4-1 and Marquez made his mark on the league.
Andres Guardado (Deportivo La Coruña)- Guardado played all 90 minutes in a 0-0 friendly against Olympiacos. He was given 78 minutes in the 3-1 friendly defeat against Lazio. Next: Real Zaragoza 8/29 La Liga
Jonathan Dos Santos (Barcelona/Barca Atletic)- Dos Santos made it on to the call-up list for the second leg game against Sevilla FC for the Spanish Super Cup, but didn’t make it any further than that. Barcelona won the Spanish Super Cup. Next: Milan 8/25 Friendly; @ Racing 8/29 La Liga.
Giovani Dos Santos (Tottenham Hotspur)- Dos Santos played all 90 minutes in the 3-2 loss to Young Boys in the Champions League. The player was not considered because of injury for the 2-1 win over Stoke City. Next: Young Boys 8/25 Champions League; Wigan Athletic 8/28 Premier League.
Carlos Vela (Arsenal)- Vela entered in the 66th minute as Arsenal demolished Blackpool 6-0. Next: @ Blackburn Rovers 8/28 Premier League.
Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez (Manchester United)- 'Chicharito' was given the start and played 74 minutes in Manchester United’s 2-2 draw against Fulham. Next: West Ham United 8/28 Premier League.
Pablo Barrera (West Ham)- Barerra appeared all 90 minutes in front of his home crowd in the Hammers’ 3-1 loss to Bolton. Next: Oxford United 8/25 Carling Cup; @ Manchester United 8/28 Premier League.
Efrain Juarez (Celtic)- Juarez scored the first goal in Celtic’s 2-0 win over FC Utrecht in the Europa League; he played all 90 minutes. Again, the player was given all 90 minutes in the 4-0 win against St. Mirren. Next: @ FC Utrecht 8/26 Europa League; @ Motherwell 8/29 Scottish Premier League.
Carlos Salcido (PSV)- Amidst rumors about transferring teams, Salcido was not called up for the 1-0 loss in the Europa League against Sibir Novosibirsk. He was left on the bench for the 3-1 win against AZ Alkmaar. Next: Sibir Novosibirsk 8/26 Europa League; ADO Den Haag 8/29 Eredivisie.
Francisco ‘Maza’ Rodriguez (PSV)- ‘Maza’ started the game against Sibir Novosibirsk, but was sent off in the 39th minute for pushing an opposition player to the ground. Hector Moreno (AZ Alkmaar)- Moreno played all 90 minutes in the 2-0 win against Aktobe Lento in the Europa League. Nery Castillo (Chicago) - Started and played 45 minutes in the 2-1 win over New England as well as the 3-2 loss to Houston. Castillo has been playing as a left wing in Carlos De Los Cobos' system and is still trying to adapt to MLS as well as regaining his match fitness. Next: at Seattle 8/28
Mariano Trujillo (Chivas USA) - Did not play in the 1-0 loss at FC Dallas. Trujillo had picked up a red card against Seattle and was suspended for the game. Next: DC United 8/29
Rodolfo Espinoza (Chivas USA) - Played 90 minutes in the 1-0 loss at FC Dallas. Next: DC United 8/29
Martin Vasquez (Chivas USA) - With the loss at FC Dallas, Chivas USA are slipping further out of contention for a playoff spot, particularly with Houston winning. Houston are in sixth place in the Western Conference with Chivas in seventh and last. Next: DC United 8/29
Carlos De Los Cobos (Chicago) - De Los Cobos' Fire side split a pair of games, beating New England at home and losing a tough match in Houston - Chicago came from a 3-1 deficit to tie but lost the game in the end. Next: Seattle 8/28
Mario Garcia (Boyaca Chico FC)- Garcia remained out injured in the 3-1 loss to Deportes Tolima. Next: Millonarios 8/29
