With the Manchester United striker out this weekend and the Villarreal playmaker in doubt, El Tri could be without the two stars when World Cup qualifying resumes.Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez is set to miss Manchester United’s clash against rival Liverpool on Sunday, according to reports from the British press, while Giovani dos Santos’ participation from the start of Villarreal’s game on Saturday against Osasuna is also in doubt.
It raises the possibility that neither Mexican star will be 100 percent fit when the national team gathers next week for games against Honduras on Sept. 6 in the Estadio Azteca and the United States on Sept. 10 in Columbus, Ohio.
Hernandez’s hamstring injury occurred after he returned to Manchester United following his extended summer break.
The former Chivas player will join up with the Mexico squad having last played a competitive game June 22 in the Confederations Cup against Japan, meaning Hernandez will be severely lacking in match fitness and possibly still carrying the injury.
Dos Santos left the field at halftime of Villarreal’s 2-1 win Saturday against Real Valladolid with an injury to his left thigh, and it seems that the 24-year-old has not fully recovered.
“I’m not sure that he will start (against Osasuna),” Villarreal coach Marcelino Garcia Toral stated in a press conference Friday. “Thinking about the situation and that he could play two consecutive games with the national team, I have my doubts about starting him.”
Dos Santos has begun the season with his new club in fine form, scoring two goals in his first two games.
