thumbnail Hello,

The former France international believes that corruption could rip the sport apart, claiming that it is an even more serious issue than racism.

UEFA president Michel Platini has called on everyone involved in the game to unite in the fight against match fixing, which he claims has the potential to end football.

England last week became the latest country to be hit by a conspiracy to arrange the outcome of games, with two men having been charged with conspiracy to defraud as part of an investigation led by the National Crime Agency (NCA).

Platini freely admits that something has to be done, as he feels match fixing is an issue that could result in fans across the world losing all faith in the integrity of the sport, arguing that it is even more serious than racism.

“This is a problem that attacks football,” the former France international told AS. “Because if a result is rigged before the match is played, our sport is over. It's something we should all, even the press, work together on, denouncing each corruption case that has strong indications.

“Racism is a different case, because racism is something that comes from outside and is manifested in stadiums. But fixing is something born in football, corrupting it from within. UEFA is in contact with the police in Europe. But it is not something that should only be fought by the state. Firstly, we, the ones who are in football, and also newspapers, must try to sort this problem.”
