It was reported on Friday morning that Barcelona defender Eric Abidal was suffering from the H1N1 virus and that the infection had possibly spread to team-mate Yaya Toure.

The Blaugrana have now confirmed that the Ivorian midfielder has contracted the virus, revealing that both players had complained of feeling unwell and had fevers.

In a brief statement on their official website, the club have explained the procedures that are now being followed in order to avoid the virus being spread further through the team.

"The medical team are following the established protocols by isolating the players, giving them symptomatic treatment and giving appropriate hygienic measures."

Abidal is also suffering from a thigh injury, which he picked up in the first leg of France's World Cup play-off with the Republic of Ireland.

The H1N1 virus has been hitting the Primera Division hard in recent weeks, with Atletico Madrid coach Quique Sanchez Flores and several Osasuna players also catching the virus.
