Rummenigge: Bayern's loss more brutal than in 1999

The Bayern supremo was gutted with his side's Champions League defeat against Chelsea on Saturday evening and stressed the defeat hurt even more than their shock loss 13 years ago

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has voiced his frustration with the Bavarians' Champions League final loss after penalties against Chelsea on Saturday evening.

The Premier League giants proved to be the stronger of the two from 12 yards, and Rummenigge feels that the defeat was even more brutal than Bayern's shock defeat against Manchester United in the final of the 1999 Champions League.

"I went through it all in 1999, when we lost so dramatically [to Manchester United] in Barcelona to goals in the 89th and 92nd minutes," Rummenigge said at the post-match banquet.

"That was unbelievably brutal, but I almost have the impression this evening is somehow even more bitter, brutal and basically also unnecessary. The pain is unbelievable. It's been one of those evenings when you ask yourself: wouldn't it have been better to stay at home and not have to go through this? You ask yourself how this result could ever come about."

Bayern resumes match action on Tuesday when it locks horns with the Netherlands in a friendly game at the Allianz Arena.
