Philippe Mexes has hailed Thierry Henry, labeling him an Arsenal 'idol', despite the striker's spell at the London club ending with the Gunners falling to their heaviest defeat in European football at the hands of AC Milan. The 34-year-old striker made a sensational return to Arsenal on loan in this years' January transfer window, scoring tow goals in four appearances, but now returns to parent club New York Red Bulls after the Champions League defeat.
And it seems that while Henry re-ignited his cult status among Arsenal fans, he also had an impact on his former France teammate Mexes too.
"We've all paid the best compliments possible. I was the first to congratulate him. He is an example for everyone. He is an idol for Arsenal," Mexes said. "He had to have the courage to come back and make his contribution to Arsenal. He is a fabulous player."
Mexes also acknowledged Henry's relationship with the club and sympathized with him after his return to the US
"It's a little sad for his exit," he said. "I don't think he'll regret what has happened. The fans, his Arsenal teammates and his coach can congratulate him. It's magical."
