PSV were unable to fight back after falling two goals behind at half time and were beaten 2-1 by Atletico Madrid.
Atletico Madrid 2-1 PSV
Atletico Madrid played in their usual 4-4-2 formation, with Kun Aguero and Diego Forlan up front in charge of Atletico's goalscoring for the evening.
PSV manager Huub Stevens started in a 4-4-2 formation, too. Serbian striker Danko Lazovic was paired with Danny Koevermans in an attempt to bring home a good result from an empty stadium.
The home side started the match the better side of the two, but neither side created a chance in the opening ten minutes.
Nevertheless, the first big chance of the match immediately resulted in the opener. A good ball from Raul Garcia bounced somewhat luckily to Simao's feet and the Portuguese slotted home from within six yards. PSV goalie Andreas Isaksson never stood a chance against his tap in from close range.
The Eindhoven side hardly looked dangerous until the 20th minute, when Hungarian winger Balazs Dzsudzsak sent in a cross from the left wing. However, towering forward Danny Koevermans missed the header and the chance went begging.
Sergio Aguero got ahold of the ball minutes later and opted to set up Maniche, who tried his luck from about 30 yards. No problems for the PSV goalie though, since the shot sailed over the bar.
Maxi Rodriguez double the lead for the hosts after 28 minutes. Isaksson deflected Garcia's shot into a corner, which was whipped in by Simao and reached Rodriguez. The Argentine didn't hesitate and smashed the ball home from close range. That was some poor defending by the PSV defence again.
PSV immediately fought back and came close to pegging one back minutes later. Atletico defender John Heitinga headed the ball straight to Edison Mendez, who volleyed in the shot. However, the Dutchman repaired his sloppy defending and saved the ball off the line to prevent the 2-1.
Absolutely brilliant play by Simao when he skinned Carlos Salcido before laying off to Sergio Aguero. Nevertheless, the prolific hit man aimed too high and squandered the chance.
Ecuadorian midfielder Mendez gave it another try for the Eredivisie outfit ten minutes before the break, but Atletico keeper Gregory Coupet wasn't troubled too much by his powerful free kick from about 30 yards.
PSV appeared to be awake after falling two goals behind and created several small chances. Quick forward Danko Lazovic unleashed a strike from about 25 yards in the dying seconds of the first half, but the Serbian international saw his shot sailing over the bar.
The guests started the second half brilliantly and needed only two minutes to peg one back. Once again Danny Koevermans, who also scored PSV's previous three Champions League goals, added his name to the score sheet to make the Spaniards sweat a little bit when he tapped in the ball from within six yards.
Diego Forlan won a free kick on the left in the 48th minute, which was swung in by Simao. The cleared ball fell to Maniche, who opted to give it another pop. However, the Portuguese fired his shot over the bar once again.
Some excellent goalkeeping from Isaksson prevented Aguero from restoring Atletico's two goal lead around the hour mark. Giorgas Seitaridis tried to set up the tiny Argentine after an impressive run down the wing, but PSV's goalie rushed out to clear the danger.
Florent Sinama-Pongolle came off the bench after 66 minutes and almost immediately got his name on the score sheet. Rodriguez found Seitaridis, who set up the French substitute. Nevertheless, Isaksson saved his attempt from about eight yards. He really should have done better, even if it was from a narrow angle.
PSV immediately hit back on the counter attack via Dzszudzsak. The tricky winger cracked a shot from outside the area, which caused Coupet a lot of trouble. However, the French goalie was able to tip the ball over the bar for a corner kick.
Mendez kept on trying his powerful long range strikes, but failed to find the right direction and saw his first shot going wide and his second attempt being deflected into a corner.
Atletico pulled off a great move with twenty more minutes to go. Simao cut inside and found Pernia, who crossed the ball towards Rodriguez. The right winger volleyed the ball at once, but his shot went high and wide.
Jeremie Brechet should have scored the equalizer ten minutes before the final whistle. Mendez swung in the corner and the French man was left totally unmarked for the header. However, he aimed too high and the chance went wandering.
Simao kept on causing all kinds of trouble for the PSV defenders when he pulled the ball back for Rodriguez after 83 minutes. The Argentinean international gave it a pop, but fired straight at Isaksson.
Holding midfielder Timmy Simons got another huge chance to equalize for PSV in the dying seconds of the minutes. Nevertheless, the Belgian international blasted his shot over the bar from eight yards.
