MOENCHENGLADBACH, Germany - The United States women's team already has the support of everyone at home, so why not invite President Barack Obama to attend its World Cup final against Japan this Sunday?
Following the team's 3-1 victory over France in the semifinals, several players brought up the idea of having Obama present when they attempt to win the World Cup for the third time overall and first since their historic run in 1999.
"I just talked to him actually and he says he's on his way on Air Force One right now," joked Megan Rapinoe. "Just kidding, but I wish and hope (he comes)."
Last year, Obama was scheduled to attend the men's semifinal had the U.S. team advanced in the World Cup, but a loss to Ghana in the round of 16 ended those plans.
"Obviously, men's football is bigger than women's football, but I think we're making quite a splash," Rapinoe said. "For a team from the United States, we're doing very well so I would love to see him here."
Following their thrilling shootout victory over Brazil in the quarterfinals last week, the American women have become stars back home. Celebrities are tweeting about them and major media outlets continue to cover the squad. Although they're in Germany, the players understand just how popular they have become.
"We're quite aware of it," Rapinoe said. "I don't think maybe to the magnitude that it is, but we get a sense of what's going on. It's unbelievable."
Now, all they need is the President's support and perhaps a ride back to the States with medals around their necks after the final.
"I would say (to Obama) thanks for coming and make room for us on Air Force One for the flight home," Rapinoe said.
