In the final WPS Player of the Week for the 2010 season, the honor goes to the leader of the best team in Women's Professional Soccer, Marta.
FC Gold Pride had little to play for in its final three weeks. Only two things kept the Pride playing all the way through the final whistle: its astounding unbeaten streak and the competitive nature of the individuals that comprise the 16-3-5 club.
It goes without question that Marta, the four-time FIFA Women's World Player of the Year has a competitive drive that is second to none. And on Saturday night, against a Philadelphia Independence club that needed a win to secure second in WPS, Marta and the Pride made sure that didn't happen.
But they didn't just lay back and clog the defensive end to play to a scoreless draw. Instead, the Pride opened up its offensive artillery, exploding for four goals in a 4-1 romp of the would-be second place club.
Thankfully for the Independence, Val Henderson came up with a handful of spectacular saves -- two from point-blank range on Marta -- or else the score could have been upwards to 10-1.
Marta tallied a goal, her 19th of the year while picking up her second straight WPS Gold Boot for most goals in the league, as well as three assists, bringing her to five on the season. For that, the Brazilian national was named Goal.com's WPS Player of the Week.
Also receiving consideration was another FC Gold Pride member, rookie Kelley O'Hara, who tallied two goals and assisted on Marta's lone goal of the night.
