For Sky Blue FC (5-7-3, 18 points), it was new coach, same result Saturday night at John A. Farrell Stadium in West Chester, Penn.

In their first match with Rick Stainton at the helm, the New Jersey club surrendered three goals in the first 21 minutes to the opportunistic Philadelphia Independence (7-5-3, 24 points), en route to a 4-1 win.

Joanna Lohman started the scoring for Philadelphia in the 7th minute, heading in a cross from Caroline Seger.

The Swedish international assisted again just a minute later. Her through ball found Independence striker Amy Rodriguez, who blasted a shot past Sky Blue keeper Kristin Luckenbill.

Though temperatures flirted with the triple digits on the pitch, Philadelphia continued bringing the pressure. They were rewarded in the 21st minute, as midfielder Holmfridur Magnusdottir netted an unassisted goal to put the Independence up 3-0.

Seger tied the single-game WPS assist record — set by teammate Lori Lindsey earlier this season — in the 52nd minute. Her cross to Rodriguez found the back of the net for A-Rod’s second goal of the game and her ninth of the year.

Philly keeper Val Henderson was denied a clean sheet in the 80th minute, as Sky Blue’s Brittany Taylor scored off a deflection.

The win puts the Independence in sole possession of second place in the WPS standings, while Sky Blue drift back to the middle of the pack.

Both sides will face the Chicago Red Stars next: The Independence will host the Red Stars Wednesday, July 28, while Sky Blue faces Chicago at home in New Jersey on Sunday, August 1.
