Tearing Up The Nets: Amy Rodriguez Wins WPS Player Of The Month
With five goals and two assists in five games throughout the month of June, Amy Rodriguez of the Philadelphia Independence claimed June's player of the month honors.
By Giovanni Albanese Jr.
Women’s Professional Soccer announced on Thursday that Philadelphia Independence striker – and WPS All-Star – Amy Rodriguez was named its Player of the Month for her breakthrough play in June.
Rodriguez, the top pick in the 2009 WPS Draft by the Boston Breakers, was inexplicably traded by her original team after just one season to the expansion Independence. Surely the Breakers are regretting the decision, as its former no. 1 selection has gone on to score seven goals and set up three goals in 13 games this season.
But she really picked it up in June, leading her club to a 3-1-1 record in five games and into second place in the WPS standings at month’s end. Rodriguez netted five goals and had two assists in the month, highlighted by her two-goal performance against the Washington Freedom in a 3-2, come-from-behind win on June 26 (Philly was trailing 2-0 at halftime). She also scored one and set up another in the WPS All-Star Game on the last day of June.
A-Rod became the first player to win the player of the month award unanimously (of the eight WPS months), getting the first-place vote by all participating members of the media. Previous winners of the WPS Player of the Month in 2010 included Lori Lindsey, a midfielder for the Independence, in April, as well as Sky Blue FC goalkeeper Karen Bardsley.
