Our Game Magazine: A Player-Produced Publication On Women's Soccer
Our Game Magazine launched its first issue on June 2 and looks to continue to inform readers of women's soccer worldwide.
By Giovanni Albanese Jr.
Women’s Professional Soccer has been better than great when communicating with its fans in the social media. This week, it just got better.
On June 2, Our Game Magazine was launched. Founded by Khaled El-Ahmad, Our Game Magazine is “a women's soccer magazine created by current and past players for players and fans all around the world.”
With the mission of providing a wealth of women’s soccer knowledge that “no magazine has done before,” Our Game Magazine is another avenue towards enhancing the popularity of women’s soccer worldwide, not just in the States.
When El-Ahmad brought the magazine’s concept to Boston Breakers striker Tiffany Weimer, the two decided to go for it.
“(El-Ahmad) wanted to further the popularity of the women's game ... and coincidently so did I,” said Weimer. “So with my lovely degree in journalism and his idea, we just went for it.”
El-Ahmad is the founder of football agency Connect World Football and is Weimer’s agent. He appointed Weimer as editor-in-chief of the magazine. As far as the rest of the staff, well, that was simple.
“The staff was pretty easy,” said Weimer. “I knew (Boston Breakers midfielder) Leslie Osborne was really into fashion and wants her own line of clothing one day – bam, fashion section. (Breakers GK) Alyssa Naeher was a kinesiology major and is really interested in the body, etc. – bam, health section.
“My fitness and soccer trainer from home, Mike LeGates, is incredibly intelligent – bam, fitness drills,” Weimer continued. “Carmelina Moscato is a dear friend of mine with a great soccer mind and lots of connections; Ryan Wood, Kat Galsim and Olaf Goldbecker are great resources who know what they're doing. Bam, bam, bam. Then my brother, Robert Weimer, has been in charge of the design of it. He loves me a lot. So we have some quality people doing big things.”
Who would have thought, three soccer players on the same club would be key contributors for a publication?
If you get a chance to view this online-only magazine’s first issue, you will be thoroughly impressed. Weimer expects that Our Game Magazine will be produced every two months for the time being – after all, three members of the staff are full-time soccer players. But that doesn’t mean Our Game Magazine can’t expand.
“Once we get better at it, which could be a little while, we would like to do a monthly issue,” said Weimer. “Our goal is to eventually have it distributed in print, but for now that's not an option.”
But with the product they produced in the first issue, a 40-page masterpiece including features on youth soccer, a Q-and-A piece with USA women’s national team coach Pia Sundhage and World Cup fashion statements with Osborne, it’s hard to believe Our Game Magazine won’t excel (as long as the players have the time to put it together).
And it truly is for the benefit of the readers and fans.
“We don't really think about money,” said Weimer. “We want to develop a quality product that people are interested in. If something comes of it eventually, that'd be an added bonus.”
To view Our Game Magazine’s first issue, you can go to its Twitter page @OurGameMagazine and click on the link they’ve provided. You can also subscribe to the regular newsletter they put out, and follow the magazine’s fan page on Facebook.
Our Game Magazine is clearly a one-of-a-kind publication for the people. And its from the players, no less. Could you imagine any NFL, MLB or NBA players caring that much about their fans? Weimer, Osborne, Naeher and all of the WPS are different.
“We want to make a difference in the media coverage and overall popularity of the game,” said Weimer.
You’re certainly on your way.
