Goal.com's WPS Player Of The Week: Abby Wambach, Washington Freedom

Abby Wambach was the biggest presence on the field Sunday night at Maryland SoccerPlex. Her performance in week seven gives her Goal.com's WPS player of the week.

Washington Freedom’s offense is as potent as they come in the WPS. Leading the league with 12 goals as a team, two ahead of FC Gold Pride the Freedom have got the majority of its scoring outside of what is perceived to be its best goal scorer, Abby Wambach.

Last week, Wambach netted a goal on a penalty kick, helping lead her team to a 2-1 win over the stingiest defense in the league, Philadelphia Independence, and catapult her Freedom to sole possession of second place in the standings.

Rebecca Moros scored the first goal for the Freedom. But its Wambach’s presence that has given her this week’s Goal.com WPS Player of the Week.

Going into the match against Washington, Philadelphia coach Paul Riley admitted that his duo of Allison Falk and Sara Larsson -- affectionately known as the Twin Towers -- would focus on Wambach to keep her from getting touches.

Wambach took that responsibility and paved the way to getting her teammates quality chances. While she didn’t contribute any points in the run of play, Wambach freed up the area where Moros streaked into to get her goal, and opened up a lane for Sonia Bompastor to dribble into before she was tripped up by Larsson, setting up the PK.

Wambach’s player of the week marks her second time receiving the Goal.com honor (also being named player of the week in week two) and the third time a Freedom player has earned the honor. Bompastor received Goal.com’s player of the week in week four.

After the game, Riley’s thoughts on Wambach said it all: “Abby is a handful.”

Also receiving consideration for this week’s player of the week were Kosovare Asllani of the Chicago Red Stars, who scored her first WPS goal and led her team to a 1-0 win over FC Gold Pride, and Moros of the Freedom, who also netted her first goal in helping Washington to its win over Philly.
