U.S. Women's Team Adds Canada Friendly Date

In the wake of Japan withdrawing from a North American tour, the U.S. Women's National Team and the Canadian Women's National Team will play each other instead.

The U.S. Women's National Team has scheduled a friendly against the Canadian Women's National Team on May 25. Originally, Japan was supposed to face off against Canada on that date, but withdrew from both that game and a scheduled friendly in the United States due to concerns over the H1N1 flu.

Now, instead, the U.S. Women's National Team will play in Canada for the first time since 2001. The game will be hosted by the same city as eight years ago: Toronto.

"I am grateful that we could put together a game on such short notice and want to thank the WPS teams and officials for their flexibility in this unique situation," said U.S. head coach Pia Sundhage. “We’ve been watching a lot of WPS games and it will be so nice to have all the players together who have performed well in the league. I am very happy that the USA and Canada could get together to organize this match.”

The hastily-organized friendly will mean the neighboring nations will play three times over the course of the summer.

For added drama to the game at BMO Field, both USA’s Abby Wambach and Canada’s Christine Sinclair will be looking to score their 100th international goal.
