When it debuts, however, Women's Professional Soccer actually makes a strong argument to be the best league in women's soccer, with a wealth of world-wide talent participating.
However, women's soccer has not always been a viable proposition at the pro level. The WUSA, a league launched after the success of the 1999 World Cup, floundered, losing a considerable amount of money before its demise.
With the current economic crisis, players are well aware that the young league is in a fragile state, but many are still optimistic that the time is right for women's soccer to take a big step forward. The talent of players like Brazil's Marta is a major reason people believe in the venture.
