The U.S. midfielder received his second yellow card in the 64th minute, but his club still secured passage to the group stage.
Jones, who has earned a reputation for collecting cautions, received his second yellow card in the 64th minute of Schalke's playoff against Greek side PAOK with the match tied 1-1 and 2-2 on aggregate. Attempting to dribble out of pressure, Jones lost possession and promptly tried to win it back with a lunging challenge from behind that took out Dimitris Salpingidis.
But Julian Draxler gave Schalke the lead three minutes later, and also ensured it would win any away-goals tiebreaker. Although a Kostas Katsouranis strike tied the aggregate score, creating nervous moments for 10-man Schalke late, a 90th-minute tally from Adam Szalai clinched Schalke's passage to the group stage with a 3-2 triumph (4-3 aggregate).
It was the seventh red card of Jones' club career, and his second in the Champions League. In December, he received a four-match Bundesliga suspension after seeing red for a tackle from behind in a 3-1 loss to Stuttgart.
