Clint Dempsey has been named the Futbol de Primera U.S. national team player of the year. This is the second time the 28-year-old midfielder has won the award which was formerly known as the Honda player of the year.
Dempsey scored four times in 12 matches for the United States in 2011, including the match-winner in the Gold Cup semifinal against Panama and the only goal in Jurgen Klinsmann's first win as manager of the team.
The Fulham midfielder won with 375 points and 99 first-place votes. Tim Howard finished second in the voting with 252 points and six-time winner Landon Donovan finished third in the voting with 191 points.
Dempsey last won the award in 2006 and Donovan is the only player to have won it since. Dempsey becomes one of only three players, along with Donovan and Kasey Keller, to have won the award more than once.
This is the fourth time that Tim Howard has finished second in the voting.
