Young forward determined to improve.EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ --- Despite only recently turning 18, American forward Juan Agudelo already has two goals for his country, including one in Saturday night's match against Argentina.
Slightly starstruck after the match, the New York Red Bulls product was thrilled to have played a part in such a big friendly for the USA.
“Argentina’s one of the best teams in the world and they have the best player in the world," said Agudelo of his team's competition. "For him to recognize me and that I scored against him was pretty amazing.”
The goal itself was a scrappy finish off of a set piece, a striker's goal, as Agudelo bundled in the rebound. Being in the right place at the right time was what made it possible and that's what he tries to do every time he takes his place up front for club or country.
“As a forward you always have to look for any ball you can get," said Agudelo after the match. "I did score the goal, but I feel like anyone could have scored it. I got into a good position and I was there for the rebound and I worked hard to get there."
Brought on in the second half to balance out the formation to a more traditional 4-4-2, Agudelo's orders were to provide a spark and help his team push into Argentina's final third. He did just that.
“I tried to come in with energy and give more support as a forward, mainly to Jozy [Altidore]," said Agudelo of what he wanted to accomplish. "I just wanted to support him and work hard for my teammates.”
