Among the Americans recovering from various injuries and knocks in the 30-man training camp in Princeton, N.J., is U.S. captain Carlos Bocanegra.

The defender underwent sports hernia surgery on May 5. The captain participated in training Sunday, joining others who are regaining fitness including Oguchi Onyewu (knee surgery), Eddie Johnson (left hamstring), Jay DeMerit (abdominal strain), and Chad Marshall (hamstring).

Head coach Bob Bradley will cut the roster down to the 23 players who will fly to South Africa to compete in the 2010 World Cup shortly, likely after playing an international friendly against the Czech Republic on May 25.

"There's different timetables," Bradley said, according to the Associated Press. "There's situations that need to be sorted out by next week so you can get to a 23-man roster. In other cases there's a guy like Carlos Bocanegra. He had this hernia surgery. As he comes into this camp we understand the right timeframe of moving him along, so that he's making progress every week and is ready to go."

The United States has three friendlies before kicking off the World Cup against England on June 12. Between now and then, Bradley will have to make several crucial decisions about his squad.

"You bring 30 guys in, there's still a lot of work early on in terms of getting fitness and pushing tempo," Bradley said. "I think the camp as a whole has done well. It certainly leaves us with some tough decisions as we work through the next week."
