Halftime Report: USA 1 - 0 Denmark
The FC Dallas striker, Jeff Cunningham, continued his good run of form, scoring the only goal versus the Danes thus far.
A goal from Jeff Cunningham, his first ever for the USA national team,
shook the Americans out of a sleepy first half and gave them the
advantage versus Denmark after the first 45.
The Danes should have been up in the second minute when Jesper Gronkjaer slipped through the U.S. defense and has a chance at goal from nearly point-blank range. Somehow, he managed to knocked his attempt over the bar, not even testing goalkeeper Brad Guzan.
One player very familiar with the grounds at NRGi Park, Benny Feilhaber, who plays there with AGF Arhus, tried his luck with a shot on goal in the 7th minute. Goalkeeper Thomas Sorenson handled the long-distance shot well.
However, the run of play tilted heavily to Denmark. Spurred on by the home crowd, their display of controlled passing pushed the USA squad back on defense, putting heavy pressure on Frankie Hejduk in particular.
The strikers, Jozy Altidore and Jeff Cunningham, were isolated from lack of service from lack of service.
Perhaps their fairly easy dominance lulled Denmark, as a tragic mistake on a relatively simple play turned the fortunes of the game completely around.
After collecting a backpass in the 26th minute, Sorenson hit a lazy, low outlet pass that a lurking Cunningham pounced on. With only one extra touch, he fired inside the near post for the opening goal before the defense had fully reacted.
Cunningham was last called into the USA national team in 2005, before earning a few minutes versus Slovakia in the Americans' last game. He made the most of his starting chance in this match.
The Danes reacted with a more urgent attack, but their efforts also played well into the USA's preferred counterattack style, and the play traded back and forth.
Denmark was limited to a few chances on corners and was not able to capitalize on any before the halftime whistle blew.
