USA - Egypt: What Went Right?
Share your thoughts with Goal.com about what went right for the USA against Egypt.
Before the third group match, the United States national team had zero points and a negative five goal differential. Spectacularly, a 3-0 thumping of Egypt combined with Italy's 3-0 loss to Brazil in the other match of Group B play means that the U.S. advances to the semifinals of the Confederations Cup.
A first half goal from Charlie Davies after Egypt's goalkeeper, Essam El Hadary, collided with his own defender to spill the ball set the U.S. on its way. In the second half, goals from Michael Bradley and Clint Dempsey meant that the USA will advance to play Spain in the semis.
Bob Bradley made three switches from the loss to Brazil. Charlie Davies came in up front for the ineffective DaMarcus Beasley, Ricardo Clark replaced the suspended Sacha Kljesan, and Brad Guzan manned the net. Was it the inclusion of Davies up top that turned the tide to give the U.S. its first win of the competition? Or was it Guzan, in for the tired Tim Howard, keeping the team's first clean sheet of the competition that gave the platform for the win?
