You Asked?: Submit Your Questions For Jay DeMerit
The Cinderella story of the U.S. team fought his way to a professional career and earned the start versus Italy. Whatever you've been dying to ask DeMerit about his unique journey - ask it now on Goal.com.
When Jay DeMerit moved abroad after completing college in Illinois, he had no job - nothing but a dream to play soccer and a slight advantage through his Danish ancestry, in being able to circumvent European Union restrictions to signing foreigners.
The odds were immense - he was an American taking on the English game, right in the country that prided itself on being the birthplace of the sport.
However, DeMerit's rise as as steady as it was unexpected. He was spotted playing for Northwood, a semi-pro side, and signed by Watford, a club in the Championship league.
DeMerit's goal in a playoff game versus Leeds helped Watford ascend to the Premier League in 2006.
In 2007, he also made his first appearance for the U.S. national team.
As a member of the U.S. Gold Cup team that same year, DeMerit helped them win the championship, which is how the U.S. earned the right to play in the Confederations Cup.
DeMerit has already faced Italy in that tournament, and is likely to be in the lineup versus Brazil as well.
