Onyewu Laments Loss; Then Prepares For Honduras
Following their tough 3-1 loss against Costa Rica on Wednesday, U.S. defender Oguchi Onyewu is ready to put it behind him.
It was an ugly 3-1 beating at the hands of Costa Rica in CONCACAF hexagonal round World Cup qualifying, and coming in, U.S. International defender Oguchi Onyewu knew the match would be tough.
He spoke to reporters, including Goal.com's Luis Bueno, following the disheartening loss.
“Definitely knew going in that we’d be playing two strong qualifying team,” said Onyewu of the match against Costa Rica and Saturday’s contest with Honduras. “We didn’t get any points out of this game, it’s unfortunate, but we have to put it behind us and try play to the best of our ability on Saturday.”
The Standard Liege center back knows that his team didn’t play well, and if they want to take anything from Honduras in Chicago, they need to play a better game.
“It’s never easy coming off a loss,” said Onyewu of his team’s mindset following the defeat. “As professionals we have to put it behind us and work to move forward as we prepare for the next game. Honduras is a talented team. We have a quick turnaround time between tonight’s match and the next game, but we have to do what is necessary to be prepared for Saturday.”
Costa Rica took over first place in the group following their victory of the United States and could extend that lead if Bob Bradley’s men don’t take any points from the Honduras match.
Onyewu has been a stalwart in the U.S. lineup since 2004, having made 41 appearances scoring five goals. Since joining Liege in 2004, Onyewu has made 174 appearances for the Belgian club, scoring 13 goals in the process.
