NASL International Spotlight: Overseas players score 73 percent of goals

Brazilian forward Oliver Mantiel and French forward Eric Hassli highlight a big week in the NASL for foreign-born players.
Eleven of the 15 total goals scored (73 percent) during this past Saturday’s Spring Season Week 3 encounters were scored by the league’s overseas players as it highlights the NASL international player spotlight for this week.

Two goals by Brazilian forward Oliver Mantiel led the host Ottawa Fury FC to a 4-0 victory over the Carolina RailHawks at Carleton University’s Keith Harris Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The victory was also the first in the NASL for the Canadian side in the club’s history.

Elsewhere on Saturday, French forward Eric Hassli scored the game-winner for the visiting San Antonio Scorpions as they ended the New York Cosmos 13-game unbeaten streak with a 1-0 victory at Hofstra University’s James M. Shuart Stadium; while Italian forward Simone Bracelello came off the bench to notch the only goal of the match, via penalty kick, to give the current NASL leader Minnesota United FC a 1-0 home win over FC Edmonton at NSC Stadium.

Also that evening, in the state of Florida, forwards Marius Ebbers of Germany and Uruguayan native Martin Nuñez scored for the host Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the 3-2 victory against Indy Eleven at Lockhart Stadium. Brazilian midfielder Kléberson had a penalty-kick goal, while Honduran defender Erick Norales added another tally for Indy Eleven in the loss. Meanwhile, Honduran midfielder Junior Sandoval and forward Deon McCaulay of Belize helped the visiting Atlanta Silverbacks end their five-game losing streaks with a 3-1 triumph against Tampa Bay Rowdies at Al Lang Stadium. Bulgarian forward and last year’s NASL Golden Ball winner Georgi Hristov had the only tally for the Rowdies in the loss.

Every Monday throughout the 2014 Spring Season, the North American Soccer League (NASL) puts its international stars - both coaches and players - under the ‘NASL International Spotlight’ focusing on the league’s overseas connections.
