FC Dallas 0-3 Toronto FC: Reds qualify for quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League

Joao Plata notched a second half double and set up another to send Toronto through to the next round in the CCL, eliminating Dallas.

Toronto FC beat FC Dallas 3-0 in Texas on Tuesday night, sending the Canadian club through the quarterfinal stage of the CONCACAF Champions League.

Dallas, the first MLS team to win in Mexico, crashed out of a competition it started brightly, without a loss in its first five CCL matches. A pitiful 2,578 watched the final game of Group C.

"It all started yesterday," TFC coach Aron Winter said. "If you would have seen the guys, the players, the staff, everybody was completely focused on this game because of its importance."

Danny Kovermans opened the scoring midway through the first half, poking the ball past Kevin Hartman on the second attempt after Joao Plata found him in the box.

Plata scored two more in the second half. The 19-year-old Ecuadorian, the shortest player in MLS history, side-footed shots into the bottom right corner of the net in the 69th and 81st minutes to seal the result.

"They showed up to play tonight. They competed for every ball. They were very focused on getting a result," FCD coach Schellas Hyndman said. "I just don’t think we were as committed to this game as they were or as much as we needed to be."
