Owen Coyle's Burnley have had an initial approach for Jason Scotland turned down by Swansea City, and a deal looks tough to negotiate.

The Clarets are looking to strengthen their squad with the minimum possible outlay this summer and have long been linked with Swansea striker Jason Scotland, who played under Coyle at St. Johnstone.

This interest was been confirmed with the news that Burnley had made an offer, but their bid and the Swans' valuation of their star striker are some distance apart.

"Burnley have made an approach for Jason Scotland, but our valuation for a player who has finished our top scorer for the last two seasons is miles apart," Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins told The Guardian.

"We value Jason very highly; after all he has scored 53 goals in the last two seasons for us.

"We certainly won't let any player go for below what we think they are worth; whether that's Jason Scotland or anyone else for that matter."

As with many advisors, however, Scotland's agent was playing a different tune. The Trinidad and Tobago star was signed for just £25,000 from St. Johnstone and Mike Berry, the agent in question, has pleaded with Jenkins to accept the reported £1m bid.

"Jason would like Swansea to seriously consider the bid because he has aspirations to play in the Premier League," Berry is quoted as saying in The Guardian. "He has sweated blood for Swansea in the past few years and hopefully the fans have enjoyed his performances.

"I think everybody at Swansea would agree he has earned the right [to play in the Premier League]."
