Johannsson scores in fifth straight game

The in-form U.S. national team striker found the back of the net yet again, with his goal providing the difference in a 3-1 victory over Greek side Atromitos.
The Iceman is on fire.

Icelandic-American U.S. national team striker Aron Johannsson scored for the fifth straight game to open the season for AZ Alkmaar, netting the decisive goal in his side's 3-1 away victory over Greek opponent Atromitos in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League play-in tie.

Johannsson, who had three league goals and a Dutch Super Cup goal to his name entering play, tallied the eventual winner in the 74th minute with a fine individual effort. Starting at midfield and running down the right channel, Johannsson received a pass from Willy Overtoom and carried into the box, taking on his defender one-on-one.

Johannsson's cutback forced his mark to slide, and he coolly finished inside the near post with a right-footed shot to put AZ up 2-0.

Atromitos pulled a goal back from the penalty spot two minutes later through veteran Greek international Dimitrios Papadopoulos to halve the deficit, but AZ re-opened the two-goal edge in the dying moments. Johan Gudmundsson tallied his second of the match in stoppage time, though, to provide ample advantage for the Dutch side to take back into the return leg, with an eye on qualifying for the group stage of the competition.
