With a few players already in action, we take a look at some of the big stories surrounding the elite Americans in Europe.Boyd starts out hot
Terrence Boyd bagged a brace in Rapid Vienna’s first win of the 2013-14 campaign, scoring two second-half goals as his side defeated Weiner Neustadt 4-0. Both of Boyd's goals on headers. The striker was also part of the side that disappointingly got eliminated early on in the Austrian Cup a few weeks back. Rapid Vienna fell to third division club LASK Linz, losing 5-4 on penalties following a 0-0 battle through regulation. Boyd converted one of the spot kicks, but his effort was not enough to prevent the somewhat embarrassing loss.
Altidore takes field for Sunderland
Jozy Altidore nabbed an assist in his unofficial Sunderland debut as the Black Cats defeated Tottenham in a Hong Kong preseason affair 3-1. Brad Friedel and Clint Dempsey featured for Tottenham.
Dempsey remains with Tottenham
Speaking of Dempsey, the Texas native’s agent, Lyle Yorks recently refuted reports that Tottenham was interested in moving the attacking midfielder. Obviously, if an offer come along Dempsey could be moved but for now, he is accompanying the team during preseason training.
Ream plays left back
Tim Ream played left back for Bolton during a 2-1 preseason loss to Rotherdam United last week. The defender played 73 productive minutes and should challenge for a starting spot as the season approaches.
Gatt out for season
Molde and U.S. national team winger Josh Gatt is set to miss the rest of the Norwegian League season after suffering a knee injury. The winger suffered the injury on June 29 as Molde defeated Sarpsborg 3-1, and he will miss out on the club's foray in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds.
