Terrence Boyd started and played well on Saturday, tallying a goal and an assist as Rapid Vienna came back from 2-0 down to grab a point. Boyd got his squad back into it in the 60th, notching a goal from short range. Later, with his club down 2-1, Boyd set up Deni Alar in the 67th minute to earn his side a share of the points.
Howard remains out for Everton
Tim Howard was once again absent for Everton due to a back injury and it showed, as back-up Jan Mucha allowed three goals in a four minute span on Saturday. The result was a disappointing 3-0 loss at home to Wigan in a crucial FA Cup quarterfinal match up. The seasoned keeper has two broken bones that should heal naturally, but it may be several weeks before the New Jersey native returns to goal.
Guzan plays valiantly as Villa makes some noise
Brad Guzan played a fine match on Monday, making seven crucial saves, but Manchester City outlasted the Birmingham outfit as Carlos Tevez broke a 0-0 deadlock to sink the Villains 1-0. The keeper made the scoreline look a bit better for his club as the visitors easily could have tallied a few more had it not been for Guzan’s top form. On Saturday, Aston Villa played very well, controlling possession as it downed Reading 2-1. Guzan played well but was not as troubled, making three saves. Defender Eric Lichaj did not play last week.
Altidore stifled in draw
Jozy Altidore started on Saturday but couldn’t get much going as AZ Alkmaar drew 1-1 with ADO Den Haag.
Dempsey out, but Friedel in
Clint Dempsey, still out with a calf injury, watched on as Spurs defeated Inter 3-0 in Europa League play on Thursday. Brad Friedel started in goal and made two saves as Tottenham dominated the contest at home. On Sunday, both players did not play as Spurs lost a high scoring affair 3-2 at Liverpool.
Bradley out due to suspension
Michael Bradley was out on Saturday due to yellow card accumulation. Without him, Roma drew 1-1 with Udinese.
Jones out due to suspension
Jermaine Jones was out on Saturday due to a card accumulation suspension. In his absence, Schalke defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-1, moving into the top four in the process.
Cameron in, Shea out for Stoke
Geoff Cameron started on Sunday and played the full 90 while Brek Shea was an unused substitute as Stoke fell at Newcastle 2-1. The club sits comfortable in the middle of the table but it has lost three contests in a row.
Williams starts, Johnson out for Hoffenheim
Danny Williams started on Saturday while Fabian Johnson was not dressed as Hoffenheim played one of its best games of the season, besting SpVgg Greuther Furth 3-0. Williams was effective in the midfield while Johnson’s absence was reportedly due to muscular problems.
Chandler starts in victory
Timothy Chandler started on Friday and played well as Nurnberg picked up a big road win, beating FC Augsburg 2-1. The three points lifted the club up towards the middle of the table. Michael Parkhurst was an unused sub in the match.
Edu starts in loss
Maurice Edu started on Sunday but wasn’t very effective as Bursaspor lost badly at Fenerbahce 4-1.
