Americans Abroad recap: Jozy Altidore’s goal binge continues

The American striker got back on the score-sheet on Saturday, tallying his 21st goal of the season against Roda JC.
Jozy Altidore continued his career season on Saturday as AZ drew 2-2 with Roda JC thanks in part to the striker’s efforts. With his club trailing 1-0, Altidore took charge in the 35th minute. The forward got the ball about 19 yards out, turned and fired a right-footed shot low into the left corner of the net, pulling his squad level.

Altidore has 21 goals in all competitions and with 16 strikes in league play, he trails Wilfried Bony by two goals for the Eredivisie lead.

Howard beaten late in FA Cup action

Tim Howard made 10 saves on Saturday but needed to make 11 as Oldham snatched an FA Cup fifth round replay after drawing 2-2 with Everton thanks to a late Matt Smith header. The U.S. international was beaten early on but the visitors rebounded and by the second half, the Merseyside outfit was up 2-1. Yet, late in stoppage time, Smith’s header deflated the visiting fans while sending the home crowd into a frenzy.  

Dempsey and Friedel help Spurs in Europa play

Both Clint Dempsey and Brad Friedel started on Thursday as Tottenham bested Lyon 2-1 at White Hart Lane. Friedel made three saves, notably stopping an Alexandre Lacazette attempt in the second half. Dempsey was a big part of Spurs’ opening goal when he drew a foul just before halftime. Teammate Gareth Bale stepped up and drilled a sensational free kick from 35-yards out. The in-form Welshman added another fantastic free kick in injury time to win the match. The two squads will play the second leg this Thursday.

Bradley hits the pine

Michael Bradley started from the bench for the first time since Octover on Saturday, as Roma shocked league leader Juventus, earning a 1-0 win. Bradley came on for the final 22 minutes in a game that was decided by a lightning bolt of a strike from Francesco Totti.

Jones plays well for Schalke 04

Jermaine Jones started on Saturday and played well as Schalke fought back from 1-0 and 2-1 down to earn a 2-2 draw at Mainz. The midfielder nearly scored on one occasion but Michel Bastos did the work for the visitors, tallying a brace including an 82nd minute equalizer which settled the scoreline.

Hoffenheim remains in drop zone

Both Fabian Johnson and Danny Williams started on Sunday, with Williams picking up a yellow card as Hoffenheim lost to Stuttgart 1-0. Johnson played the entire contest at left back while Williams was replaced after 54 minutes. Hoffenheim remains in the relegation zone.

Chandler assist helps Nurnberg secure draw

U.S. international Timothy Chandler started and played the full 90 on Sunday as Nurnberg drew 2-2 with Hannover 96. Chandler was essential in giving his club a point as his cross found Sebastian Polter late, who made it 2-2.

Parkhurst makes first Bundesliga start

Michael Parkhurst made first Bundesliga start for Augsburg, as his side fell 2-1 at Bayer Leverkusen. The American defender played all but the dying moments of the game.

Kljestan assists in victory

U.S. midfielder Sacha Kljestan played 76 minutes on Friday night, contributing an assist as Anderlecht continued to dominate the Belgian top flight with a 2-0 win over Royal Charleroi SC. After taking an early 1-0 lead, Anderlecht put the game away just before the end of the first half when Kljestan found Massimo Bruno for the second goal of the match.

Boyd subs on

Terrence Boyd came on late in the second half on Sunday as Rapid Vienna fell 2-1 to Austria Vienna. The striker was quiet as Rapid was down to 10 men for most of the contest.
