Altidore now has 14 goals in the Eredivisie, tied for second overall.
Dempsey heroic in the end
Clint Dempsey endeared himself to the White Hart Lane faithful on Sunday when he pulled back a last-gasp equalizer at the death to give Tottenham a 1-1 draw with Manchester United. Aaron Lennon played a ball across the box, allowing Dempsey to cut back a nice goal from just outside the six yard box. Tottenham has now taken four points from the league leaders this year. The London outfit remains in fourth place, just four points behind Chelsea.
Bradley plays big role in Roma's week
Michael Bradley started on Wednesday and played well as Roma got by Fiorentina 1-0 after extra time in Coppa Italia action. The midfielder picked up a yellow card during the contest as Mattia Destro broke the deadlock late. On Sunday, Bradley started against Inter and played a big role, drawing a penalty which Francesco Totti converted in the 22nd minute. The visitors eventually equalized, leaving the contest knotted at 1-1.
Holden makes his return
Stuart Holden returned to first-team action on Wednesday, following nearly two years of absence due to knee surgery and recovery. The midfielder came on for the final 16 minutes as Bolton progressed in the FA Cup by defeating Sunderland 2-0.
Stoke splits two
Geoff Cameron started on Tuesday and played well despite picking up a yellow card. The Potters progressed in the FA Cup by ousting Crystal Palace 4-1. On Saturday, Cameron played the full 90 once again but he looked sluggish and the back four was torched by Swansea en route to a 3-1 defeat.
Villains settle for a draw
Brad Guzan started while Eric Lichaj played the majority of the match on Saturday as Aston Villa drew 2-2 with West Bromwich Albion. Lichaj came on for the injured Nathan Baker in the fifth minute and had a solid game, testing the keeper on one occasion. Guzan made four saves but he allowed a Peter Odemwingie strike late which gave WBA a point.
Hoffenheim duo goes scoreless in draw
Fabian Johnson started while Danny Williams came on as a sub on Saturday as Hoffenheim struggled during a 0-0 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach. Both teams were rusty after a lengthy break, with only four on-target shots throughout the contest. Hoffenheim remains in the bottom three of the Bundesliga.
Cherundolo and Jones both out
Schalke 04 defeated Hannover 96 5-4 last week but both Jermaine Jones and Steve Cherundolo missed the contest for different reasons. Jones is still serving his suspension while Cherundolo had been suffering with knee pain. Jones has one more game remaining for his red-card match ban.
Edu heads to Turkey
Maurice Edu completed a loan move to Turkish side Bursaspor last week. The defensive midfielder made just one appearance for Stoke this season and was floundering on the bench. Edu came off the bench and played 25 minutes in Bursaspor’s 2-1 win over Kayserispor on Saturday, eclipsing the total minutes he played with Stoke the entire season.
