Clint Dempsey scored three goals last week, powering Spurs to a pair of wins
On Saturday, the squad took on Coventry in FA Cup action. Dempsey ran the show from the start, scoring the opening goal from close range in the 14th minute. The American attempted another shot after 32 minutes and while his shot was blocked, Gareth Bale was there to double the advantage. Five minutes later, the same pairing hooked up again as Bale’s cross sailed perfectly to Dempsey who headed in the final strike of the day. Deuce nearly pulled off the hat trick late but his shot flew over the top of the net.
Dempsey now has six goals in all competitions this season.
Everton moves into fifth
Everton shot up to fifth place in the table on Wednesday after defeating Newcastle 2-1. Tim Howard started as usual and made four saves after allowing an early Papiss Cisse goal. Both Leighton Baines and Victor Anichibe scored for the visitors.
Friedel starts in cup play
Brad Friedel received a rare start on Saturday and played well, blanking Coventry as Spurs won 3-0. The keeper stopped four shots, notably keeping out a vicious William Edjenguele effort in the second half.
Bradley struggles as Roma loses
Michael Bradley started for Roma on Sunday but didn’t have a very good outing as Napoli dominated 4-1. Bradley had some quality passing moves in the midfield and helped Roma control possession but Napoli took advantage of its opportunities and prevailed behind an Edinson Cavani hat trick. The loss leaves Roma in sixth place.
Cameron has quiet week
Geoff Cameron started on Tuesday as Manchester City easily handled Stoke 3-0. The defense was busted open on several occasions and Cameron did not have a very good outing. On Saturday, Stoke and Crystal Palace drew 0-0 in a FA Cup third round contest. Cameron started once again and attempted a shot but his effort went off target.
Heartache and triumph for Villains
Brad Guzan started on Tuesday and played well, stopping four shots as Villa went into stoppage time up 2-1 over Swansea. However, Danny Graham put one past Guzan at the death to settle the score line at 2-2. Eric Lichaj was dressed but did not get any action. On Saturday, Lichaj started while Guzan got the day off as the Villains defeated Ipswich Town 2-1 in a FA Cup third round match-up.
