Dempsey rings in new year with game-icing goal for Tottenham

The American kicked off 2013 in style with a long-range effort that iced Spurs' win and extended the club's unbeaten streak to five games.
Clint Dempsey did not need long to get his 2013 off to a good start.

Dempsey's right-footed, long-range strike took a deflection and looped over Reading goalkeeper Adam Federici and under the crossbar in the 79th minute to seal Tottenham's 3-1 victory over the relegation-threatened club on New Year's Day.

Dempsey, who had just returned from a minor groin injury, had entered the match as a substitute three minutes earlier in his second appearance after sitting out for a couple of weeks. The goal was the U.S. national team star's second in four matches and fourth of the Premier League campaign, and it helped Tottenham extend its unbeaten streak to five matches and remain in third place behind Manchester United and Manchester City.

Fellow American Brad Friedel watched from the bench as French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris maintained his place between the posts in Andre Villas-Boas' starting lineup.
