The American center back scored in second-half stoppage time to spare Malaga a loss at third-division Eibar and salvage a first-leg draw in the Round of 16.Oguchi Onyewu played the role of hero for Malaga Tuesday, scoring a second-half, stoppage-time equalizer to force a 1-1 draw with third-tier Eibar in the first leg of their Copa del Rey Round of 16 tie.
The 30-year-old American center back, who has been limited mostly to minutes in the UEFA Champions League and Copa del Rey, tallied on a header off a free kick in the third minute of stoppage time to salvage a draw in the road leg and limit Eibar's momentum heading into the home leg on Jan. 8. Onyewu also picked up an early yellow card in the match, which was his seventh appearance this season. The goal was his second since joining Malaga on a season-long loan from Sporting Lisbon.
Eibar, which sits in second place in the third-division Segunda B, had taken the lead in the 74th minute on Txema Anibarro's goal.
