Schalke's Jermaine Jones suspended four matches for red card

The midfield aggressor appears set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after seeing red Saturday against Stuttgart.
Schalke and U.S. national team midfielder Jermaine Jones has been suspended four games after earning a red card in Schalke's 3-1 loss to Stuttgart on Saturday.

In the 73rd minute of the Bundesliga match, Jones went into a tackle from behind and was shown a straight red. It was the first time Jones -- a serial yellow card collector -- had ever seen a straight red card.

The German federation decided to punish Jones with extra matches because he is a serial offender. He was suspended eight matches last season for a stomp on then-Monchengladbach midfielder Marco Reus.

Schalke announced on its official website that it will appeal the decision. If the appeal is unsuccessful, Jones would not be eligible to return until his club's match against Bayern Munich on Feb. 9, three days after the U.S. begins the Hexagonal against Honduras.
