Dempsey and Bedoya come up big in Europa League wins

Both Americans turned in solid performances as their teams each won 3-1 in Europa League play

Clint Dempsey and Alejandro Bedoya both played big roles in their teams' Europa League wins on Thursday.

Dempsey continued his good form for Tottenham, as he assisted on a goal and had the telling touch on a Panathinaikos own goal, as Spurs defeated the Greek side 3-1 to advance to the round of 32 in the Europa League.

The American midfielder got himself in a good spot to receive a pass in the 29th minute, and played an incisive through ball to Emmanuel Adebayor, who scored Tottenham's opener. With the match tied in the 76th minute, Dempsey got on the end of a Kyle Walker free kick, and his header crashed off the crossbar and in off Panathinaikos keeper Orestis Karnezis for an own goal.

The 3-1 win saw Spurs progress in the tournament. Bedoya's Helsingborg side was only playing for pride against FC Twente, but the American scored a goal to help his team earn its first win of the competition.

In the 21st minute, Nikola Djurdjic found Bedoya in the box and the midfielder slid a low shot into the net. The Swedish side would go on to win 3-1, finishing the group stage with a 1-1-4 record, good for third place in Group L.
